Bee-lieve it: Showtime has officially renewed Yellowjackets for a fourth season. However, this fourth season will be its last. So much for that five-year plan. Here’s everything we know about Yellowjacket’s fourth and final season.
We are so back
Yelowjackets s4 got the green light on May 20, 2025. “Yellowjackets has become a cultural juggernaut, with season three shattering all previous records,” Chris McCarthy, co-CEO of Paramount Global and President of Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios, said in a statement. “Ashley and Bart have masterfully crafted an utterly singular, genre-defying phenomenon — a perfect alchemy of psychological horror, survival thriller and coming-of-age drama that continues to captivate audiences worldwide, brought to life by our extraordinarily talented and beloved cast.”
The renewal news is not necessarily a surprise, given by the show’s performance. Variety previously reported that the viewership grew with every season of the show; almost 2 million people watched the season-three premiere, more than in season two, and viewership remained consistent.
But it’s also never been more over
On October 10, series creators Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson announced on social media that this upcoming fourth season will be the show’s last. “After three incredible seasons, and great consideration, we’re excited to announce that we will be bringing the story of Yellowjackets to its twisted conclusion in this fourth and final season,” they wrote. We’ve always known there would come a point when the story would tell us it wants to end, and it’s our belief that our job — our responsibility — is to listen.” They thanked writers, cast, crew, and the fans. “We can’t wait to share the final chapter with you,” they wrote, “and hope you find it…delicious.”
What happened to the plan for five seasons?
Throughout the series, showrunners Lyle, Nickerson, and Jonathan Lisco have all said they planned for a five-season run of the show. Lyle explained to Entertainment Weekly in 2023: “We don’t really see this as being more than a five-season show. I think that there are shows that can go forever, but I think that when you’re telling such a deeply serialized story and it’s about these characters’ lives, you want to reach a satisfying conclusion and not just drag things out forever. This isn’t really one of those setup shows where it can go anywhere.” It appears the story ran out before the planned number of episodes. The show killed off a number of adult characters in seasons 2 and 3, limiting what can happen in the future. And the past? That’s another country.
Will there still be flashbacks in Yellowjackets season 4?
Even if there is a rescue in season four, there’s still more story to tell in the flashbacks. Lyle told the Los Angeles Times, “These girls have changed remarkably, for better or for worse, in their time out there, especially because of their age. They’re so malleable to begin with, and they’ve become very different people. And to see those people readjust to a world that is almost — I wouldn’t say insignificant to them; it’s obviously very significant — foreign to them now in a way that we think would be really ripe for storytelling and to dig deeper into their characters.”
When will Yellowjackets seaosn 4 air?
Let’s answer that question with another: When will Yellowjackets s4 even start filming? Per The Hollywood Reporter, the girlies are headed back to the woods some time next year.
