NEW YORK – Lefty-hitting Georgia high school shortstop Dax Kilby became the Yankees’ first selection in Sunday night’s 2025 MLB Draft.
Kilby, 18, taken 39th overall by the Yanks out of Newnan High School, was committed to Clemson University according to MLB Network.
The 6-foot-2, 190-pound Kilby is the second shortstop taken by the Yankees with their first draft selection in the last three years, having previously selected George Lombard Jr. – currently the organization’s best-rated prospect – 26th overall in 2023.
Last year, the Yankees selected right-handed starting pitcher Ben Hess with their first draft pick, at No. 26 overall out of the University of Alabama.
In addition to being penalized for exceeding the luxury tax threshold, moving them 10 picks down the order before making their first selection this year, the Yankees lost their second-round pick for signing free agent Max Fried.
The Yankees next selection will be at No. 103 overall, in the draft’s third round.
