Spoilers below for Peacemaker season 2 finale, “Full Nelson.”
Season 2 of Peacemaker ended on quite a cliffhanger for Chris. His buds form Checkmate, the metahuman Blackwater of DC Comics. But Chris himself gets yeeted to a secret jail planet by Rick Flagg Sr. Seems like John Cena and the crew will need a third season to resolve those problems, yes? Not necessarily, says James Gunn. “I don’t want to never say never, but right now, no,” Gunn told Deadline. “This is about the future of the DCU.” The season 2 finale of Peacemaker isn’t setting up a season 3; it seems to be teeing up Man of Tomorrow, and possibly a Checkmate spinoff.
Gunn told Deadline that Checkmate and Salvation (the jail planet) were always going to be a big part of Peacemaker season 2, because they’re important to later stories he wants to tell: “That was always pretty instrumental in the overall, overarching story that I’m telling in the DCU, but also connected to it as well.” Checkmate has done lots of covert ops spy nonsense in comics throughout the years, and notable works with Batman on occasion. But Gunn says the Caped Crusader isn’t necessarily coming through this incarnation.
And what’s up with Salvation? The planet first entered comics in the George R.R. Martin-pitched Salvation Run, when villains were exiled to the planet and factioned off in a big soapy battle for power. Among them was Lex Luthor, who in Gunn’s DCU may be goin off-world for Man of Tomorrow.
