Sycamore’s 31-30 win over Fairview on Sept. 26 included a bizarre moment midway through the second quarter that led to a Fairview touchdown and the ejection of a Sycamore player.
With 8:23 left in the first half, Fairview’s Gage Proctor picked off a Sycamore pass and had a clear path to the end zone, running along Sycamore’s sideline. But a Sycamore player charged out from the sideline to tackle Proctor, drawing a flag and ejection. Fairview was awarded the touchdown to give the Yellowjackets a 6-0 lead in the Region 6-3A matchup.
“Shocked,” Fairview coach Chris Hughes said about the moment. “(The Sycamore player) is good. He’s one of their best. Made a bad decision.”
Under TSSAA rules, the player’s ejection means he’ll be unavailable for the War Eagles’ Oct. 3 game at Camden. Sycamore moved to 4-2 on the season and remains unbeaten (3-0) in region after the one-point win. Fairview is 4-2 and 1-1.
“Honestly, I don’t know what to say. Yes, he came off the sidelines and made a tackle after an interception,” said Sycamore coach John Harrison, who admitted he was caught off guard by it, but couldn’t comment further.
