Who could have seen it coming? (Everyone.)
If the Denver Broncos use their first-round pick to select North Carolina running back Omarion Hampton 20th overall in next week’s NFL draft, nobody will be surprised. He has been a popular pick for the Broncos in mock drafts, and USA TODAY’s latest first-round projection is no exception.
NFL beat writers and NFL experts from USA TODAY Sports and the USA TODAY Network teamed up for a mock on Thursday, with Robert Zeglinski of For The Win assigned to Denver’s pick.
Zeglinski mocked Hampton to the Broncos after the Las Vegas Raiders took top running back Ashton Jeanty at pick No. 6.
“Sean Payton needs a new bell cow tail back for Denver and they don’t get much better than Hampton,” Zeglinski wrote for USAT. “He’s a classic between-the-tackles runner who should be the perfect balm for Bo Nix’s developing offense and an upstart Broncos team that simply needs more field-tilting weapons on all fronts.”
