Another victory has yielded yet another victim for the “Carolina Reaper.”
That moniker was thrust uponCarolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young in 2024—after, on multiple occasions, a win led by the second-year passer resulted in a job loss. Whenever Young’s Panthers beat their opponent, said opponent removed a player or staffer from their position.
The graveyard from last season is as follows:
- New Orleans Saints: Fired head coach Dennis Allen after Week 9 loss to the Panthers
- New York Giants: Benched quarterback Daniel Jones after Week 10 loss to Panthers
- Atlanta Falcons: Fired defensive coordinator Jimmy Lake and defensive line coach Jay Rodgers after Week 18 loss to the Panthers
Unfortunately, it’s time to add another headstone.
On Monday, the Falcons announced the firing of wide receiver coach Ike Hilliard. The decision comes a day after their 30-0 defeat to Young’s Panthers.
This discharge, however, may have more to do with Carolina’s defense, which pitched the franchise’s first shutout since 2020. The group recorded two interceptions and forced two turnovers on downs while holding Atlanta to just 201 passing yards.
Hilliard, a former receiver himself, began as the Falcons’ wideout coach in 2024. He’s also held the same position for Washington (2012, 2014-2019), Buffalo (2013) and Pittsburgh (2020-2021).
Next up for Young and the Panthers are . . . *ominous music plays* . . . the New England Patriots.
