No. 15 Tennessee (4-1, 1-1 SEC) defeated Mississippi State (4-1, 0-1 SEC), 41-34 in overtime, Saturday at Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville, Mississippi.
Tennessee, who had the ball first in overtime, led after a 25-yard touchdown run by DeSean Bishop. The Vols clinched a victory after a fourth-down defensive stop in overtime.
The game was tied, 17-17, at halftime and, 34-34, at the end of regulation.
Tennessee scored two defensive touchdowns in a contest for the first time since 2010 in a win against Ole Miss at Neyland Stadium. Colton Hood returned an interception 22 yards for a touchdown with 4 minutes, 19 seconds remaining in the second quarter.
Joshua Josephs also returned a Bulldogs’ fumble for a touchdown in the game.
Joey Aguilar completed 24-of-40 passing attempts for 335 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. He eclipsed 300 passing yards for the eighth time in his college career.
Bishop led the Vols in rushing yards (72) on 11 attempts and scored the game-winning touchdown.
Mike Matthews and Chris Brazzrell II each recorded six receptions. Matthews totaled 110 receiving yards, while Brazzell II recorded 105 yards and one touchdown.
Max Gilbert converted 2-of-3 field goal attempts for Tennessee, which had five sacks against the Bulldogs.
