Taiwan swears in new president as China pressure grows

Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te was sworn in on Monday amid growing Chinese military pressure and a hostile parliament. The democratic island’s president is expected to boost defense spending and strengthen ties with Washington during his four-year term to deter China from seizing the island. China considers Taiwan as part of its territory and has long threatened to use force to bring the island under its control.
