Guwahati: Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh escaped a major tragedy when suspected Kuki militants ambushed the advance security convoy of the chief minister in Kangpokpi district in which one security personnel was injured on Monday.
Security sources said that Chief Minister N Biren Singh, who is yet to reach Imphal from Delhi, was planning to visit Jiribam to take stock of the situation in the district and an advance security convoy was on its way to make security arrangements for his visit.
Informing that the incident took place at about 10.40 am on the National Highway 37, Imphal-Jiribam road, at T. Laijang village about 26 km away from Imphal, security sources said that the area falls under the jurisdiction of New Keithelmanbi police station in Kangpokpi district.
The injured has been identified as Moirangthem Ajesh, 32, a resident of Thanga Ngaram Leikai, Bishnupur district. He received a bullet injury on the back of his right shoulder. He has been evacuated to a hospital in Imphal.
Security sources said that multiple gunshots were fired at the vehicles of the security forces, who retaliated, they said, adding, that the shootout is still going on along a stretch of National Highways.
