Steelers sign former 49ers RB to one-year deal

Pittsburgh’s already stacked RB room — featuring Jaylen Warren, Kenneth Gainwell, and 2025 third-round pick Kaleb Johnson — just added another bruising runner to the mix, as the Steelers are signing RB Trey Sermon to a one-year deal, as reported by insider Jordan Schultz.

Sermon, drafted in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers, struggled to make an impact in his rookie season, as he was buried on the depth chart behind Raheem Mostert and sixth-rounder Elijah Mitchell. He would be released before playing a second season with the 49ers, after which the Eagles claimed him off waivers.

The former third-rounder unfortunately played in just two games in 2023 — accumulating only 19 rushing yards on two carries.

Sermon joined the Indianapolis Colts practice squad in 2023 and was promoted to the 53-man roster soon after. After spending time as the third RB on the depth chart, he took over backup duties in 2024 behind Colts star RB Jonathan Taylor. Sermon played in all 17 games, with three starts, rushing for 159 yards on 56 attempts.

It was reported that the four-year RB attended the Steelers rookie minicamp, where he clearly made an impact — enough to earn a spot on the 90-man offseason roster.

His brand of power football will complement Johnson, Warren, and Gainwell nicely — but one can’t help but wonder if the Steelers are continuing to miss opportunities to add home-run hitting speed to the RB room.
