Should Texas A&M HC Michael Earley return for the 2026 season?

Texas A&M’s 2025 season has come to a close after falling to LSU 4-3 in one of the best games of the SEC Tournament in the Quarterfinal round on Friday night, as several early mistakes ultimately led to the loss, while a questionable base interface called against second baseman Ben Royo prevented the game-tying run in the seventh.

However, the incredible comeback performance by junior outfielder Jace LaViolette, who produced two of the Aggies’ three runs amid having surgery Friday morning to fix his broken hand, the active home run leader’s Texas A&M career is likely over, as he is assumed to declare for the 2025 MLB Draft.

Sitting at No. 50 in the RPI rankings, it’s nearly impossible for the Aggies to make it back to the NCAA Tournament barring a miracle on Monday afternoon, so for the talented, yet underwhelming 2025 roster, this is the end of the road, and questions regarding first-year head coach Michael Earley’s future have increased in volume.

So, does Earley deserve a second shot in College Station? Some believe the answer is no based on this season’s results, but from a culture perspective, LaViolette’s post-game quote speaks volumes regarding what this roster thinks about their leader, not matter how the season ended.

“I’d die for him and it’s not only me.

“I just want to say thank you to the 12th Man, too.”

However, just because players personally like a head coach does not mean he is a solid fit for the future, and while he has done a solid job on the recruiting trail, his ability coach in tough moments took a massive hit during the Aggies’ series loss to Missouri, which all but eliminated their chances of making it back to the postseason.

Earley is only 37-years old, making him one of the youngest head coaches in the country, and is vastly inexperienced compared to his SEC counterparts after just three seasons as a paid assistant under Jim Schlossnagle as Texas A&M’s hitting coach (2022-2024).

Still, an argument could be made that forcing Earley to make changes to his coaching staff, especially hitting coach Caleb Longley should breed improvement after Texas A&M finished last in the SEC in batting average. Again, this is all speculation, and Athletic Director Trev Alberts will have alot to consider over the next week.
