SEC Power Rankings: New No. 1 team sits atop conference following loaded week

When taking a look back at this past weekend across SEC baseball, there were many results that likely caught your attention, some maybe more than others.

For example, one of the SEC’s most surprising results came at Auburn where the Tigers played host to one of the nation’s top teams, and went on to sweep that series as well. In addition to that, ranked matchups took place in a few other places across the conference as well, with one of the biggest coming in Athens.

One a few examples of what was a loaded past week across the conference, how did those results now impact our weekly SEC power rankings?

Let’s take a look at the latest SEC power rankings entering this week’s action, which are current as of Monday, April 14.

16. Missouri Tigers

Previous Ranking: No. 16

Missouri got a win during the midweek at SIUE, but would remain winless in SEC action after being swept at Florida in a series where the Tigers were outscored in all a combined 19-4. The Tigers record is now 12-23 overall, as well as 0-15 in SEC play, entering a week where Missouri will host Missouri State and Oklahoma.

15. South Carolina Gamecocks

Previous Ranking: No. 15

After a 13-3 home victory over USC Upstate to begin this past week, South Carolina went on to be swept at Texas A&M during the weekend to fall to 2-13 in SEC play, with one loss being a 17-0 defeat in Game 2. The Gamecocks are also now 20-17 for the season, and will look to snap that three-game skid this week at home against both The Citadel and Ole Miss.

14. Kentucky Wildcats

Previous Ranking: No. 12

Playing against one of the SEC’s more challenging schedules this past week, Kentucky dropped three-of-four to Louisville and Texas where their lone victory was over the Longhorns in Game 2 of the weekend series, 5-4 in 15 innings. The Wildcats now sit at 19-14 overall, as well as 6-9 in SEC play, entering a week that includes a midweek game against Miami (OH) before a weekend trip to Tennessee.

13. Florida Gators

Previous Ranking: No. 14

The Florida Gators are coming off one of their top overall weeks of the season so far, as the program went 4-0 with wins over Florida State and Missouri at home, the former of which was a 5-4 victory over one of the best teams in the ACC. Florida’s record now sits at 24-14 overall, as well as 4-11 in SEC play, entering a week in which they will play Stetson and Mississippi State, the latter of which is in Starkville.

12. Mississippi State Bulldogs

Previous Ranking: No. 13

The Bulldogs have an impressive week in the state of Alabama in which they defeated UAB during the midweek, as well as took two-of-three in Tuscaloosa over the weekend to improve to 22-14 overall. Also now 5-10 in SEC play, Mississippi State will welcome both Southern and Florida to Starkville this week.

11. Texas A&M Aggies

Previous Ranking: No. 11

After a rough start to conference play, Texas A&M is now one of the SEC’s hottest teams, as the Aggies are riding a six-game current winning streak that included a road victory at Sam Houston, as well as a home sweep over South Carolina, this past week in which they outscored opponents a combined 54-20 over four games. With these results, the Aggies’ record improved to 20-15 overall (6-9 in SEC) entering a week in which they will host Tarleton, as well as travel to Fayetteville for a tough series at Arkansas this weekend.

10. Vanderbilt Commodores

Previous Ranking: No. 7

After a midweek victory over Dayton, the Commodores dropped two-of-three at Oklahoma in which they needed a 13-2 win during Game 3 to avoid the sweep. Vanderbilt’s record is now 26-10 overall, as well as 8-7 in SEC action, entering a week in which the Commodores will play entirely at home against both Lipscomb and Georgia.

9. Oklahoma Sooners

Previous Ranking: No. 8

After a rough loss to Dallas Baptist to open the week, Oklahoma bounced back in a big way at home during this past weekend with a series win over Vanderbilt to now sit at 25-10 overall, as well as 7-8 in SEC play. The Sooners’ next games will come on the road this week against both Oklahoma State and Missouri.

8. Alabama Crimson Tide

Previous Ranking: No. 6

Alabama originally began the week with one of the conference’s top midweek wins at home over Southern Miss, but later went on to fall during the weekend against Mississippi State, dropping two-of-three to the Bulldogs at home. A result that dropped Alabama to 8-7 in SEC play, as well as 29-8 overall, the Crimson Tide will now play UAB and LSU this week, the latter of which is in Baton Rouge.

7. Ole Miss Rebels

Previous Ranking: No. 9

After beginning this past week with two lopsided victories over Memphis and Alcorn State in which they outscored the two a combined 39-1, Ole Miss went on to drop two-of-three to Tennessee in Oxford over the weekend in a series that came down to a decisive Game 3. The Rebels’ record now sits at 27-9 overall (9-6 in SEC) ahead of matchups against Little Rock and South Carolina this week, the latter of which is a series in Columbia.

6. LSU Tigers

Previous Ranking: No. 4

After a midweek win over Nicholls, LSU saw their lengthy winning streak snapped over the weekend at Auburn in where they were swept by the Tigers, outscored in all a combined 15-8. Having now lost three-straight, LSU now sits at 31-6 overall, as well as 10-5 in SEC play, ahead of home games this week against McNeese and Alabama.

5. Auburn Tigers

Previous Ranking: No. 10

The Auburn Tigers had one of the SEC’s most impressive weeks overall in which they picked up a back-and-forth 9-8 win at Georgia Tech during the midweek, and then swept LSU at home over the weekend. As a result, Auburn (26-10 overall, 9-6 in SEC) is now riding a five-game winning streak entering a week in which the Tigers are set to travel to Jacksonville State and Texas.

4. Tennessee Volunteers

Previous Ranking: No. 3

Tennessee opened this past week with a home victory over Alabama State, and then took two-of-three at Ole Miss to leave Oxford with a series victory, improving to 11-4 in SEC play, as well as 31-5 for the season. The Volunteers will stay in Knoxville this week for games against Bellarmine and Kentucky.

3. Arkansas Razorbacks

Previous Ranking: No. 1

Now sitting at 32-5 overall (12-3 in SEC), Arkansas had a strong showing to start this past week where they topped Arkansas State, as well as took Game 1 at Georgia by a final score of 13-3. The Razorbacks however went on to lose the next two by final scores of 7-6 in each, the latter of which was in 12 innings, and will play entirely at home this upcoming week against UAPB and Texas A&M.

2. Georgia Bulldogs

Previous Ranking: No. 5

Georgia had one of the top results from this past weekend, taking two-of-three at home against Arkansas in which they won Games 2 and 3 to win the series, and combined those results with a 16-2 victory over Presbyterian to now sit at 32-6 overall, as well as 10-5 in SEC play. The Bulldogs will now play away from home this week, coming on a neutral field against Georgia Tech on Tuesday, as well as at Vanderbilt during the weekend.

1. Texas Longhorns

Previous Ranking: No. 2

Texas had an overall solid week in which the Longhorns went 3-1 with wins over Houston Christian and Kentucky, with their lone blemish coming in Lexington during Game 2 in which the Wildcats won a 15-inning contest, 5-4. A series of results that now sees Texas sitting at 29-5 overall, as well as 13-2 in SEC play, the Longhorns will play entirely at home this week against UTRGV and Auburn.
