Seahawks rookie QB Jalen Milroe flashes dual-threat ability in preseason Week 1

Seattle Seahawks backup quarterback Drew Lock got the start in Thursday’s 23-23 preseason Week 1 tie with the Las Vegas Raiders. Lock played the entire first half, completing 12-of-22 passing attempts for 147 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. The fireworks arrived in the second half, when Seattle inserted rookie quarterback Jalen Milroe into the game.

A raw but talented quarterback coming out of Alabama, the full range of Milroe’s dual-threat capabilities were on display. The third round (No. 92 overall) signal-caller completed 6-of-10 passes for 61 yards. Milroe also scrambled three times for 38 rushing yards, including an explosive ground-gain of 27.

As raw as Milroe is as a passer, at least one of his passing completions was an eye-opener. The former Crimson Tide standout rolled to his right, running away from two Raiders defenders to complete a throw in-between the coverage to Tyrone Broden Jr. for a 15-yard gain. It offered a peak into his upside.

Milroe’s 27-yard scramble was equally as impressive. It occurred with the offense facing a second-and-12 from inside their own five-yard line. That’s typically no-man’s land for a preseason offense, but Milroe faked a handoff and won the corner for a chain-moving run that got the Seahawks offense moving.

Milroe went through some ups-and-downs. His final five dropbacks included one completion, a fourth-down incompletion and a sack, as noted by ESPN’s Brady Henderson. Ultimately, Milroe was as advertised in his official NFL debut. The Seahawks have an exciting, athletic rookie quarterback worth developing.
