The Boston Red Sox have been an interesting team this season. They have been more of a fringe contender, but are in the race.

At 48-45, they are 6 1/2 games back in the American League East and one back of the final Wild Card spot. They’ve won five consecutive games, even after trading Rafael Devers.

But because they are more of a fringe contender, whether they’ll buy or sell is unknown. Craig Breslow wants to add to the club, but how they play will likely dictate what they do.

Tim Britton, Aaron Gleeman and Chad Jennings of The Athletic listed their Top 40 trade candidates. Closer Aroldis Chapman was one of them, and he was linked to one of his former teams, the Chicago Cubs.

“He’s capable of dramatically altering a contender’s bullpen as a setup man or a closer. And this is nothing new for Chapman, who was traded mid-season in 2016 and 2023, winning the World Series with his new team in both years.”

Chapman is putting together a strong season with the Red Sox. He is 3-2 in 39 appearances with 15 saves, a 1.25 ERA and 2.0 WAR.

The seven-time All-Star was traded to the Cubs in 2016, and he helped them win their first title since 1908. He was sent to the Texas Rangers in 2023.

The Cubs could certainly benefit from having the two-time World Series champion and former Reliever of the Year back in their bullpen. They’ll have to give the Red Sox some top prospects.

If Boston struggles leading up to the deadline, it would make sense for them to shop Chapman and see what they can get for him. Rental pitching comes in high demand at trade deadlines, and Boston would be wise to capitalize on his value if they are out of contention.

If they remain in contention, that decision becomes tougher. It will be interesting to see if any teams inquire about Chapman.
