Perry High School Athletics Hall of Fame to induct 2025 class

The 2025 Perry High School Athletic Hall of Fame class will be honored this weekend.

Here is the 2025 hall of fame class: 

Brett Savage

Savage is a 2004 graduate of Perry, where he was a standout baseball player and earned numerous accolades, including first-team All-Ohio, All-Federal League, Mizuno All-Ohio and All-Stark County honors. Continuing his baseball career at the University of Akron, Savage served as a two-time team captain and etched his name into the record books by tying the school record for most hits in a game (five) — a feat he accomplished twice. 

Sherry (Douglas) Lashaway

Lashaway, a 2003 Perry graduate, was a state qualifier in cross country and a standout softball player, earning four varsity letters as a second baseman. A two-time first-team All-Federal League selection, she helped lead the Panthers to the Division I state semifinals and hit .475 her senior year. She continued competing in both sports at Cleveland State. A strong student as well, she graduated with a 4.0 GPA and was a member of the National Honor Society. 

Roger Webb

Webb, a longtime Perry High School bowling coach, was a seven-time Stark County and four-time Federal League coach of the year. He led Perry to four Federal League titles, five Stark County conference championships, three sectional titles, two district titles, and five state finals appearances. He coached three Stark County and four Federal League players of the year, including a back-to-back winner, and five bowlers who rolled 300 games. At retirement, he was the winningest coach in Stark County history with a 150-48 record. 

Brent Skogen Sr.

A 1981 Perry graduate, Skogen was a dominant force on the basketball court. A three-year letterman and two-time team MVP, he earned multiple honors including first-team All-Federal League and All-Stark County selections. He set several school records, including most points in a season (423) and most career points (990) before the 3-point era. He led Perry to back-to-back sectional championships in 1979-80 and 1980-81 and was recognized with numerous all-state and all-district honors. His outstanding rebounding and scoring ability made him one of Perry’s greatest athletes. 

Spencer Smith

A 1998 Perry graduate, Smith was a versatile track athlete, competing in events from the 100 to 1600 meters. He was a three-time state qualifier in the 3200 relay and qualified for the 1600 relay as a senior. In his senior year, Smith placed sixth in the state 800, joining his brother on the podium. He contributed to school-record-setting relays in both the 1600 and 3200, with the 3200 relay setting a Stark County record at the time. Smith also was part of the 1995 regional champion 3,200 team and helped Perry secure multiple Federal League and district titles. 

John Hornyak

A 1982 Perry graduate, Hornyak was an all-league performer in both football and baseball. He went on to play baseball at Walsh College, earning All-Mid-Ohio Conference, All-District 22, Area VI, NAIA Scholar-Athlete, and Academic All-American honors. He was the team MVP in 1986, finishing with a .442 average and 41 RBIs in 35 games. Hornyak graduated with Walsh records for both single-season and career batting average (.387) and was later inducted into the Walsh Wall of Fame. A lifelong educator at Edison Middle School, Hornyak coached baseball, football, and basketball throughout his career, along with single seasons in cross country and wrestling. From 2023-25, he served as associate head baseball coach at Hoban High School. 

Jessica (Ehmer) Schering

A 2004 Perry graduate, Schering was a standout in both volleyball and basketball. She earned multiple first team honors in volleyball and helped lead her team to a district championship. Schering also excelled in basketball, earning all-county and all-district honors, as well as recognition as The Repository Female Athlete of the Week and Mayor’s Cup MVP. She continued her volleyball career at University of Mount Union, earning three letters and All-OAC honorable mention. 

Eric Magnacca

A 2008 graduate of Perry, Magnacca was a standout athlete in both track and football. He set multiple school records in track, including the 55 meters (6.56 FAT), 60 (7.25 FAT), 100 (10.95 FAT), and relay records in the 400 and 800. Magnacca earned All-Ohio Division I honors in track in 2005 and helped his 800 relay team to a third-place state finish. On the football field, he was named Division I second-team All-Ohio in 2006 and honorable mention in 2007. Magnacca’s speed and athleticism left a lasting mark at Perry. 

Carlie (Perretta) Aho

A 2015 Perry graduate, Aho was the recipient of the Federal League’s Sam DiBlasi Scholar Athlete Award, given to the league’s top senior scholar-athlete. She earned 11 varsity letters across track, cross country and swimming. In swimming, Aho was a three-time All-Ohio honoree, four-time first-team All-Federal League and All-Stark County selection, and two-time Stark County Swimmer of the Year. She continued her swimming career at the University of Cincinnati, achieving two NCAA B-cuts and earning Academic All-AAC honors three times. 

Faith “Charliee” Strickland

A 2015 Perry graduate, Strickland was a key contributor to multiple Federal League, district and regional championship teams. She was part of the state champion 1,600 relay team, which still holds the Stark County record. Individually, Strickland qualified for regionals in the 200, 400 and long jump, and was also a member of the state-qualifying 800 relay team. 

Jake Newhouse

A 2015 graduate of Perry, Newhouse was a dominant force in wrestling. He captured the 2015 state championship after finishing as state runner-up in 2014. Newhouse was a two-time district runner-up and two-time sectional champion, with a career record of 121-18. He also earned eighth place at Ironman, runner-up at Beast of the East and eighth place as a Fargo Freestyle All-American. A two-time All-Federal League honoree, Newhouse was named Stark County Wrestler of the Year in 2015. 

Jose Rodriguez

A 2015 graduate of Perry, Rodriguez was a standout wrestler who won two state championships (at 106 pounds as a sophomore and at 126 pounds as a senior) when he was also named the Division I Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament. He finished as state runner-up his junior year. Continuing his success beyond high school, Rodriguez became a 2019 National Champion at Notre Dame College.
