GREEN BAY − The Green Bay Packers (2-1) have their second straight road game this weekend when they face the Dallas Cowboys (1-2) on Sunday night, Sept. 28.
The Packers suffered their first loss of the season to the Cleveland Browns where they made crucial mistakes down the stretch.
Each week, we ask our PackersNews reporters a question of the week and also let the fans weigh in.
What was the most concerning part of the Packers loss to the Browns that could hurt them against Dallas?
Marsha Kummer: An offensive line that is banged up, commits too many penalties and cannot protect our quarterback.
Eric: Bad decisions at the end of the game that costs them. Love throwing into coverage, bad decision results in INT. Didn’t need to pass on that play anyway, run it force TO by Cle and punt. Jacobs’ run where he almost fumbled, why run it two more times risking more errors like the penalty, bad decision results in lost yardage, kneel on it and kick the FG. Why wasn’t the ST coordinator fired in the offseason after a poor year?
Steve: Bad play calling and Love’s stupid mistakes.
Patrick: Concentration.
Pete Oemichen: Discipline… 17 called penalties.
Tom Possley: Do they have any offensive plays against a strong pass rush or are they just offensive?
Dan R.: Does Jordan Love really have what it takes to lead the offense?
Mike M.: Everyone seems to be playing 8-9 men up to stop Pack’s run. Passing game is all short. Do we need to look at a trade to get another O Lineman and a bigger WR as a target, given injuries?
Steve Bowe: Fix the penalty problem they have.
Jim: How bad does it have to get before LaFleur, Gutey, and/or Policy show Bisaccia the door? Yikes!
Rod R.: How do we lose 15 yards on 3rd-and-one? Poor decision by QB? Or bad call by coach?
Joe: I know Love was pressured and sacked five times, but did he not see open receivers as well?
Stephen Wallis: Ineffective line play leading to a lack of a consistent ground game and an off balance passing attack.
RM: Injuries to O Line.
Joe: Is Jordan Morgan a bust?
Paul W.: It’s still early but as a team they don’t seem to be in sync and playing with a high level of concentration and energy. The entire team was flat vs. Cleveland and the presnap errors on both sides of the ball were killers. Throw in the lack of execution on STs.
Ken C.: It’s the mental mistakes. For example, when at the end of the first half, when McKinney intercepted the pass. If he had just batted it down, they would have had a chance at a 60 yard field goal attempt. Those three points might have won the game. Lots of presnap penalties, special team mistakes, and Love’s bad pass. Not a team that was eager to play. And that worries me.
Peter Eide: Jordan Love
Shawn Miller: Jordan Love
Stevo: Jordan Love is a second tier quarterback
Cole Northup: Jordan Love still makes poor decisions (that crucial INT and taking sacks). And 85 didn’t block on that failed field goal.
Rich Albert: Jordan Love’s numerous errors! His best pass of the game hit the Browns defender right between the numbers. How about his hanging onto the ball when chased…?
David Levy: Lack of run game.
Calvin: LaFleur seemed incapable of making in game adjustments. He kept playing Morgan who had arguably the worst performance of a lineman in decades giving up sacks and taking penalties all night before getting crushed and allowing the blocked field goal. Lafleur needs to adjust and they never did.
Penny Robinson: Love needed a little more time for better passes.
Karl: Love’s lack of emotion after a terrible play. If you don’t care enough, it will keep happening.
Ralph Johnson: Matt LaFleur and Jordan Love.
Brian: No running game.
Pete: O line and special teams penalties or the INT – it’s a tie.
Marc Drewry: Offense couldn’t find a way to mitigate pass rush.
Donny Sparacino: Offense, line, QB and injuries.
Michael: Offensive line
Hap: Offensive line
Chuck: Offensive line
Jim: Offensive line
Benjamin: Offensive line
Johnnie Mcglaston: Offensive line
Bob: Offensive line did not play well.
JJ: Offensive line health and level of play.
Kent: Offensive line improvement.
LR Cole: Offensive line play
Mick Dennin: Offensive line
Keith P.: Offensive line play
Mark: Offensive line play, especially pass blocking
Scott Bunke: Offensive line play. Injuries have taken a toll already. They must get that straightened out and get the running game going.
S: Offensive line struggles
Mitch Viegut: Offensive line. We have no talent. Also, Jordan Love continues to brain freeze in tight moments.
Kevin: Offensive play calling and execution.
Jay: Offensive line play – pass blocking and lack of run game
Tom Wisneski: Penalties
Steve Snyder: Penalties and Offensive line play
Mark Neuville: Penalties!
Paul C.: Penalties, penalties, lack of concentration, offensive line play
Bill: Penalties, special teams, offensive line
Nick S.: Penalties. Offense was obviously concerning but the Cowboys have zero defense so that *shouldn’t* be an issue next week.
Brian: Poor special teams play
Corey Wilson: Poor time management, especially at the end of the game. It has been a hallmark under LaFleur.
Tim Burkhalter: Problems with the offensive line and possibly/probably having two starters miss the upcoming Dallas game.
Janis: Protection of Jordan
Cathy: Slow start offensively, way too many penalties and Jordan Love throwing a huge INT (can’t seem to just throw the ball away).
Steve Patterson: Special teams breakdowns are always a concern for the Packers and it will continue to cost them games.
Mark Riemer: Special teams play
Phillip: Staying focused!
John Henson: Team focus, it’s a long season don’t get caught up in all this hype.
Michael Sligh: Team penalties.
Jack Carini: That a Matt LaFleur team lost another close game at the end! The list is getting long!
DP: The absolute lack of offensive production … and not-so-special teams play.
Tosafish: The lack of tactical preparedness of the entire sideline operation. This has been MLF’s largest flaw – he’s a top strategist on offense but frequently seems like he’s a beat behind when time critical decisions must be made. Even mundane play calls – inexcusable to have delay of game penalties, particularly after play stoppages.
Randall Pouwels: The mess in the offensive line
Dennis Klumb, Jr.: The most troubling aspect of Green Bay’s loss to the Browns was the combination of a depleted offensive line, a non-existent run game, inconsistent
quarterback play, and sloppy special teams. All of these issues are interconnected — if this continues the Packers could be 2-2 at the end of Sunday night.
Don G.: The offensive line and the ineffective replacements, and #2 LaFleur’s lack of time management.
Grant: The offensive line needs to be better at everything, work on communication and play faster.
Mike Wendt: The offensive line pass blocking and penalties.
Tim Hando: The offensive line was a disaster. If we have a repeated abysmal performance against Dallas, it’s going to be a long night. Can we safely assume that Banks and Tom will be held out, especially with a bye in week 5? Will the line be Walker, Morgan at LG, Jenkins, Rhyan and Belton at RT?
Shawn: The play of Jordan Love
Biff McMurph: The play of the Oline
Gregg: The poor performance of the o-line
Dan Miller: The QB stinks to put it mildly.
John Gietman: The way Matt LaFleur called this game
Terry Nilles: There are so many but what concerned me most was the ineffective offensive line play and the coaches inability or unwillingness to adjust.
Jeff: There has been no running room for Jacobs! Special teams are far from special.
Jim S.: They haven’t been effective running the football this year. Some of that no doubt has been because of injuries and some of it is daring Love to try to beat them.
Toston: (Zach) Tom
Ted: Too much emphasis on Parsons return to Dallas.
Tom Neuschaefer: Unforced penalties.
Rich Dreger: What bothered me the most was that the Packers could not find offensive plays to counter what the browns were doing on defense. I kept thinking that screen passes might work.
Carson: When driving the ball down the field with three minutes to go, getting sizeable chunks through the air, why stop at the Cleveland 20 and burn more clock to settle for a field goal attempt? Green Bay was in their “prevent offense” at that point.
Steve: When is the offensive line going to start clicking?
Alan: Zach Tom trying to play while injured. This shouldn’t have happened.
JMB: Simply blocked field goals.
Tim Burkhalter: Problems with the offensive line and possibly/probably having two starters miss the upcoming Dallas game.
Packer Don: Special teams.
