TPUSA’s competing halftime show isn’t fazing the NFL. At a press conference Wednesday, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said the league was standing by its choice of Bad Bunny as headliner for the Super Bowl Halftime Show. “It’s carefully thought through,” Goodell said, according to ESPN. “I’m not sure we’ve ever selected an artist where we didn’t have some blowback or criticism. It’s pretty hard to do when you have literally hundreds of millions of people that are watching.”
Ever since Bad Bunny was announced as the Super Bowl LX halftime headliner in September, there has been a far-right freak-out. Apparently, it’s a disgrace to “America” to have a Spanish speaker headline the show. Never mind that Bad Bunny is American. Never mind that he already performed at the halftime show in 2020. Goodell isn’t paying attention to that noise; he’s focused on the music. “We’re confident it’s going to be a great show,” he said. “He understands the platform that he’s on, and I think it’s going to be exciting and a united moment.” Goodell also pointed to Benito’s overwhelming global popularity as a reason to have him perform, especially as the NFL tries to court international fans. “He’s one of the leading and most popular entertainers in the world,” Goodell said. “That’s what we try to achieve.”
