John Michael Schmitz is entering his third season as the starting center of the New York Giants. The team is hopeful that Schmitz can continue to improve and become the solid player they had hoped when they selected him in the second round of the 2023 NFL draft.
Schmitz was not very impressive as a rookie, earning a grade of 41.4 from Pro Football Focus. Last year, his grade went up 20 points, but he was still below average in pass protection and allowed a league-high 6.0 sacks among centers. He was rated 35th overall out of 64 NFL centers in 2024.
This summer, we’ve seen rookie linebacker Abdul Carter spin Schmitz around, which could be an attestation to either Carter’s ability or Schmitz’s lack thereof.
The problem with Schmitz this camp has been his inconsistent performance in snapping the football. It’s not a dire issue yet, but if it persists when the Giants begin their padded practices on Monday, it could become one.
John Michael Schmitz had about 3 errant snaps today, one day after Abdul Carter put him in a blender.

“Yeah, we don’t want to have those high snaps, no question,” head coach Brian Daboll said on Sunday. “I think the linemen, we will get into the lineman here in the next couple of days when we get power rushes and games and there’s a variety of things, but the line has been working good together.
“We’ve got one more day here until we get the pads on. John Michael has been a good leader for us.”
Perhaps it’s all the changes to the quarterback group, where they have three new faces: Russell Wilson, Jaxson Dart, and Jameis Winston. Maybe JMS is still acclimating to the new faces, but he can’t allow this to linger.
