There might’ve been trouble in paradise between the Pittsburgh Steelers and their former safety Minkah Fitzpatrick — who was traded to the Dolphins in exchange for All-Pro CB Jalen Ramsey and Pro Bowl TE Jonnu Smith.
On Wednesday’s episode of 93.7 The Fan, Pro Football Talk insider Mike Florio addressed Fitzpatrick’s Pittsburgh exit — arguing that something seemed off about the nature of the trade:
“Something weird was going on,” said Florio. “I’m waiting for the reports to come out as we get closer to training camp about whatever the issues were between the Steelers and Minkah Fitzpatrick. It just feels like they were lying in the weeds waiting to make this move.”
It’s important to remember Florio is simply speculating here, but if his gut feeling is accurate, the surprise nature of Fitzpatrick’s Steel City exit would make more sense.
Fitzpatrick is widely regarded one of the most respected defenders within the Steelers locker room — which made the trade all the more shocking for his peers. That includes veteran DT Cam Heyward, who considered the move “bittersweet”.
Will the Steelers lean on their newly acquired DB in Jalen Ramsey — who was part of Fitzpatrick’s trade to Miami — to address the huge hole at safety? Or could Pittsburgh sign a veteran free agent to put the finishing touches on their defense?
