Michigan Wolverines offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey is seemingly leaning towards former UCF Knights and Fresno State Bulldogs quarterback Mikey Keene in the team’s open competition.
High-profile freshman wunderkind Bryce Underwood, fellow upperclassman transfer and former Miami Hurricanes, Missouri Tigers, and East Carolina Pirates signal-caller Jake Garcia, and sophomore Jadyn Davis make up the rest of the group. On3’s Anthony Broome tabbed all four to be in the mix for the job.
From inside the University of Michigan’s campus, the Michigan Daily’s Sam Gibson revealed a heavy lean towards Keene from Lindsey.
Their shared time in the Orlando metro is the main reason
“Keene also brings the advantage of previous familiarity with Lindsey, having played a season of snaps with Lindsey on the staff at Central Florida. Although fall camp has been underway for just a few days, Lindsey noted Keene’s comfortability with certain installs and his shrewdness in huddles,” Gibson wrote.
Garcia was dismissed as an emergency option who won’t get priority in the team’s rep distribution.
He’ll only play if “injuries,” plural, arise.
“Garcia brings similar experience, albeit with less productive results, but remains a viable arm if injuries arise. Regardless of whether or not he sees meaningful snaps in the fall, sharing reps with Underwood, Davis and Keene provides valuable experience if he’s needed,” Gibson wrote.
Keene has overcome upper-body injuries over the spring to emerge as Lindsey’s preferred option under center.
As a fifth-year super-senior, he signed up to play in Ann Arbor for one reason: to get a shot.
Underwood may cost the big bucks, but Keene looks to be tasked with getting a lick back from the Ohio State Buckeyes and Big Ten at large in 2025.
