Max Verstappen has shut down speculation linking him with a sensational move to Mercedes, insisting that much of the talk about his Formula 1 future is simply people trying to “create drama.”
For weeks, rumors swirled that Verstappen could activate a break clause in his Red Bull contract and jump ship to Mercedes as early as 2026. Team principal Toto Wolff had reportedly expressed interest in the four-time world champion, particularly as Lewis Hamilton prepares to depart for Ferrari next season.
However, Verstappen made it clear his immediate future lies with Red Bull. “People are waffling so much throughout the whole season, while the only one that actually can or should speak is not speaking — that’s me,” Verstappen told Sky Sports F1.
“And I do that on purpose, because it makes no sense to start throwing things around. Some people just like to stir the pot. Some people just like to create drama. But for me, it’s always been quite clear.”
The Dutchman confirmed he is already planning for 2026 with Red Bull, dismissing suggestions of a switch to Mercedes despite reports of him being seen near Wolff in Sardinia.
“If my boat is next to Toto’s,” Verstappen said bluntly. “You can have a personal relationship with someone, even if you don’t have a working relationship with someone.”

Verstappen’s existing contract runs until 2028, but RacingNews365 reports he holds exit options if Red Bull slips outside the top two in the championship next season. While the possibility of a move in 2027 remains, Verstappen has committed to Red Bull for at least one more season. Continuing their dominant run.
The statement comes as Red Bull prepares for the upcoming regulation changes in 2026, which will see them become a power unit manufacturer for the first time. For now, Verstappen is focused on securing another championship with the team that has defined his F1 career.
