First Doctor Who, then House of the Dragon, now Star Wars. Is there any geek property Matt Smith hasn’t touched? According to Deadline, Smith is playing a villain against Ryan Gosling in the upcoming Star Wars standalone sequel from Shawn Levy. Titled Star Wars: Starfighter, the film will come out May 28, 2027, and starts production later this year. “The reality is that this script is just so good. It has such a great story with great and original characters,” Gosling said during the original announcement at the Star Wars Celebration in April. “It’s filled with so much heart and adventure, and there just really is not a more perfect filmmaker for this particular story than Shawn.” Here’s everything we know about the Lost River reunion/space opera battle between Smith and Gosling.
What’s Starfighter about?
According to a press release from Disney, Star Wars: Starfighter will take place around five years after The Rise of Skywalker. It will be a standalone story rather than the beginning of yet another trilogy. “It’s set in a period of time that we haven’t seen explored yet,” Levy adds. THR shares that Gosling’s character “must protect a young charge against evil pursuers,” with Goth being one of them. Mikey Madison was reportedly being considered for the role before she allegedly turned it down.
Who’s writing the script?
Previous reporting indicates that Levy’s The Adam Project collaborator Jonathan Tropper will write the screenplay. Levy has been working on this film since 2022, which means he probably took brief Star Wars brainstorming breaks on the set of Deadpool & Wolverine. Idea: What if Ryan Reynolds was also in space and he said “fuck”? It could work.
Who else is starring in this Star War?
Pearl is finally going to be a star! At least in a galaxy far, far away. Mia Goth is co-villaining with Smith. And who better to join the Star Wars universe than Goth, someone with a voice that’s out of this world.
