Ankeny Centennial softball player Mady Ott and Martensdale St. Marys baseball player Travis White were voted the Des Moines Register’s metro-area female and male Athlete of the Week winners for the week of July 20-26.
Ott won female Athlete of the Week with 57% of the vote following her efforts at the Iowa high school softball state tournament.
The Centennial junior made the Class 5A All-Tournament Team after productive outings in a 9-0 quarterfinal win over Valley on July 21, an 11-3 semifinal loss to Waukee Northwest on July 23 and a 10-2 victory over Cedar Falls in the third-place game on July 24.
Ott finished the tournament 4-for-8 with a double, home run, three runs and three RBIs.
White won male Athlete of the Week with 51% of the vote thanks to his performances at the Iowa high school baseball state tournament.
He threw a brilliant 1A quarterfinal game for Martensdale St. Marys during its 2-0 victory over Kee on July 21 at Carroll.
White tossed six shutout innings with nine strikeouts and no walks to earn the victory, and he was also 2-for-3 at the plate with a triple and an RBI. He went 1-for-5 with one run and an RBI in an 18-8 semifinal win over Hillcrest Academy. In the title game, he gave up four runs on six hits with six strikeouts and three walks in six innings during the Blue Devils’ 4-1 loss to Saint Ansgar.
