When one door closes, another one opens. This is an inspirational thought to consider, especially if you’re looking for opportunities… or if you’re a nasty thief. And Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 has no shortage of said opportunities, as there are dozens of villages and settlements, each with hapless townsfolk thinking that they’re secure in their homes. Here’s our guide on how to get more lockpicks in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2.
How to get more lockpicks in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 – Lockpicking guide
Many chests in the game world are locked, and several doors are barred come nighttime, too. That’s why it’s imperative that you become a master thief by acquiring lockpicks in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. These are fairly hard to come by early in the game, but we have a few tips to help you get started with your criminal activities in the medieval age.
Note: We also have a Stealth and Thievery guide, which focuses primarily on related mechanics like sneaking and pickpocketing.
Early-game source of lockpicks
One of the best sources of lockpicks, as well as stolen loot, is the house of the carpenters in the village of Troskowitz. Late at night once folks are asleep, you can mantle on the log pile at their yard, which gives you access to the bedroom on the second floor. From there, you can pickpocket the carpenter and his father. You might not be a bird that suddenly appears, but you definitely long to be close to these fellas.
When the pickpocketing screen appears, try to prioritize the keys upon revealing them. The keys allow you to open two nearby chests that contain all sorts of weapons, shields, and, of course, lockpicks.
You can keep doing this every few in-game days to reset the contents of the chests. Soon, your ransacking of the carpenters’ home will lead you to the top of the world to look down on others.
Buying lockpicks from merchants
If you’re impatient, you could get lockpicks in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 by buying them from merchants. Several types of vendor NPCs sell these tools, including blacksmiths, traders, and some tavern keepers, too. Lockpicks tend to be quite expensive, though, so buying them is only viable once you’ve amassed enough Groschen (i.e. gold).
How does the lockpicking minigame work?
The lockpicking minigame in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is fairly straightforward but also hard to master:
Locks have degrees of difficulty ranging from very easy to very hard. The goal is to move the grey circle around the wheel. When you find the sweet spot, the circle will grow larger and turn bright yellow.Next, you need to rotate the wheel. You have to do this while also moving the circle with the mouse or the right thumbstick, keeping it at the sweet spot as often as possible. The controls–and your hands–will likely shake as you’re doing this, so try to keep steady and calm.A tip we can share is that you should stop looking at the the circle or the wheel as you’re moving/rotating them. Instead, focus solely on the correct spot on the wheel.Making too many mistakes–i.e. rotating the wheel while the circle is at the wrong spot–will cause the lockpick to break and make a lot of noise.
Skills and perks that affect lockpicking
While there are a few perks in the Thievery branch that affect the lockpicking minigame, such as Silent Fiddler and Mischief Artist, the most important one by far is Tool Master. This perk makes lockpicks more durable, allowing them to last 15% longer before they break. Also, assuming you break a lockpick, successfully overcoming the lock itself causes the used lockpick to return to your inventory so it doesn’t go to waste.
That does it for our guide on how to get lockpicks in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. As you’re sneaking around villages at night, don’t forget to take a look at our Stealth and Thievery guide.
