James Conner injury: Cardinals RB suffers season-ending, 'severe' ankle injury

The Arizona Cardinals suffered their first loss of the season on Sunday, falling 16-15 to the San Francisco 49ers on a last-second, 35-yard field goal by Eddie Pineiro. But the game wasn’t the most important loss they suffered.

Running back James Conner left the game with an ankle injury in the second half and did not return.

It is serious. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the injury is “severe” and season-ending. It will require surgery.

NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport had a similar report, but did not indicate it is season-ending — just that he will be out “indefinitely.”

If his season is over, he finishes the year with 31 rushing attempts for 95 yards and a touchdown. He also caught eight passes for 45 yards and a touchdown.

He had nine carries for 22 yards against the 49ers.

Trey Benson will now be the No. 1 back for the Cardinals.
