HS Track: Newbern, Wetzel honored by Northern Indiana Conference

Alonzo Newbern of Elkhart High School and Penn High School coach Chad Wetzel are the top award winners for boys track in the Northern Indiana Conference.

Newbern was tabbed as the NIC MVP and Wetzel was selected as the Coach of the Year.

Newbern won the 100 and 200-meter dash titles at the NIC Meet to help his team finish in second place. Wetzel guided the Kingsmen to the NIC championship.

The All-NIC list includes winners from each event from the NIC Meet. In additon to Newbern, All-NIC performers were Will Elick of Saint Joseph (110 and 300 hurdles), Max Malloy of Elkhart (1,600), Braden White of Penn (400) and Brady Lederer of Penn (3,200).

The list also includes field event performers Chris Wright of Penn (high jump), Isaac Fronk of New Prairie (discus), Mavric Poe of Penn (pole vault), Jaedon Parker of Penn (long jump) and Kaleb Johnson of Marian (shot put).

The All-NIC list for relay teams included Malloy, Aaron Richter, Jackson Ezell and Trevor Becker of Elkhart in the 3,200 event. The Penn 400 relay team of Parker, Kohen Turner, Bryan Forbes and Reuben Rutland was also All-NIC, along with the Adams 1,600 relay team of Timon Johnson, Mikey Barr, Carter Keen and Quincy Tootoo.

Penn won the NIC Meet title with 193.5 points. Elkhart placed second with 153 points, followed by Saint Joseph (97), New Prairie (49), Adams (37), Riley (30.5), Marian (29) and Washington (26).
