The Broncos had a signing on Monday that certainly has the attention of Terry McLaurin and Adam Peters of the Washington Commanders.
You see, Denver Broncos receiver Courtland Sutton signed a new deal, and the similarities with McLaurin can’t be denied.
Sutton’s deal is a four-year extension worth $92 million, which works out to an overall average of $23 million per year. Washington fans and media have been saying that Commanders GM Adam Peters is low-balling McLaurin, disrespecting McLaurin. Well, Adam Schefter reported on Monday that McLaurin is asking for more than DK Metcalf, who received an average annual salary of $33M.
Get this, Sutton is age 29, just like McLaurin. Sutton will turn 30 in October, and McLaurin will turn 30 in September. In 2024, McLaurin collected 82 receptions for 1,096 receiving yards, averaging 13.4 yards per reception. Sutton last season caught 81 pass receptions for 1,081 receiving yards, averaging 13.3 yards per reception.
Wow, could those numbers be much closer? Sutton received a four-year deal averaging $23 million, and Terry reportedly wants more than $33 million per season. Keep in mind, Schefter doesn’t actually “know” what Terry is demanding. Schefter “thinks” it is more than 33 million per year.

Commanders GM Adam Peters never told anyone in the media who he was drafting at No. 2 overall (Jayden Daniels). Why? Because he is intelligent enough to know that if he began being giddy about Daniels, the Bears might change their minds and actually determine to interview Daniels and compare him to Caleb Williams. (I still can’t believe the Bears were that lazy, chose Williams and determined to not even check out and interview Daniels.)
It’s been Terry and his camp that put it out there; McLaurin was frustrated. Then came the scheduled 32-minute session where Terry could convince the Commanders’ fan base and the NFL world that the Commanders were disrespecting, confusing, and frustrating McLaurin.
Nearly everyone fell for it, though we said here more than once, “A wise man hears both sides of a matter” before taking sides.
The Commanders have several players with no guarantees beyond 2025. Terry McLaurin was the only not to show up for the start of training camp. https://t.co/eqdhlNtwvSpic.twitter.com/YdN2KLxPee

Monday’s signing in Denver should, I repeat, “should” at least give Commanders fans and media more pause and consideration. We also suggested the very real possibility that McLaurin might be receiving bad advice from his agent, as he was not acting like the leader and team player we had seen in previous years.
Remember, Adam Peters’ job is not to make Terry McLaurin happy, giving him whatever he wants. Peters’ job is to offer a fair contract in line with the market and within his team’s salary cap over the next three or four years.
Like it or not, on Monday, the market spoke, spoke rather loudly.
