Alabama baseball and Southern Miss probably didn’t envision meeting like this in the Hattiesburg Regional of the NCAA Tournament.
The top two seeds in the four-team, double-elimination Hattiesburg Regional both lost on Friday. Alabama (41-17 overall), No. 20 in the Coaches Poll, fell behind 4-0 and just missed a walk-off home run in a 5-3 loss to the Miami Hurricanes at Pete Taylor Park.
Host Southern Miss (44-15) fared even worse on the scoreboard. The 14th-ranked Golden Eagles were routed, 11-4, by Ivy League champion Columbia in their home park.
Today won’t be the first time Alabama and Southern Miss have met this season; the Crimson Tide defeated the Eagles, 10-6, in a Top 25 nonconference game April 8 in Tuscaloosa. But after Friday’s results, one of those top 25 teams will be sent home after a very short stay in the NCAA Tournament.
