How to get Hunter Symbols 1, 2, and 3 in Monster Hunter Wilds

Hunter Symbols are a resource needed to craft endgame armor and weapons in Monster Hunter Wilds.

“Endgame” is the keyword here, as gathering Hunter Symbols requires access to tempered monsters, which become progressively available during the High Rank story chapters. Furthermore, the rarity of the resource is tied to the star-difficulty of each hunt.

Our guide tells you how to get Hunter Symbols in Monster Hunter Wilds alongside the resource category dropped from each tempered monster, from rarity 1 to 3.

How Hunter Symbols work in Monster Hunter Wilds

To get Hunter Symbols in Monster Hunter Wilds, you must complete tempered monster hunting quests, which drop the resource as quest rewards. The resource is part of the High Rank section of Wilds’ main story, meaning that you’ll need to complete the first three chapters and hit the credits.

In short, the steps to get Hunter Symbols in Monster Hunter Wilds are as follows:

Complete the first three chapters of the story

Once in chapter 4, progress through the main missions whenever they’re available, and reach Hunter Rank 20

Upon reaching HR 20, the “Wyvern Sparks and Rose Thorns” quest will become available. Once completed, you’ll gain access to tempered monsters

Complete tempered monster quests (field survey quests count)

Hunter Symbols are a guaranteed drop in Monster Hunter Wilds. As long as you’re hunting a tempered monster in a way that grants you quest rewards, you’ll see a minimum of one Hunter Symbol drop in the rewards screen. The only randomized factor is the chance of obtaining multiple Hunter Symbols in one hunt, which is a nice surprise when it does happen.

There are three rarity categories of Hunter Symbols, which correspond to the tempered monster’s star-difficulty:

5-star tempered monster quests drop Hunter Symbol 1

6-star tempered monster quests drop Hunter Symbol 2

7-star and 8-star tempered monster quests drop Hunter Symbol 3

The hunts can be from Optional Quests or Field Survey Quests, although 7-star and 8-star hunts are mostly Field Survey Quests — meaning that you’ll have to wait until a tempered monster appears on one of the biomes. For the latter, use the Environment Overview tab as a guide — opening the world map and hovering over biomes or opening the local map while being on-site will showcase a list with all available hunts.

As an additional tip, remember that you can save investigations and complete them later. For example, say that you’re looking at the Environment Overview tab and see a tempered monster that you don’t want to hunt right away. If so, select the monster, Create Quest, and when prompted, choose Save as Investigation.

Then, whenever you speak to Alma, go to Investigations and select the tempered monster. Bear in mind that both saving an investigation and creating a quest from it will cost you Guild Points.
