How San Antonio Spurs Can Trade $52.1 Million This Season, Easily originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The San Antonio Spurs did not make a splashy trade this offseason, but that doesn’t mean that they weren’t productive.
They drafted young standouts Dylan Harper and Carter Bryant, signed free agent center Luke Kornet, traded for Kelly Olynyk, and rounded out their wing and guard depth with Jordan McLaughlin and Lindy Waters III.
That doesn’t mean that the splashy move isn’t coming. The Spurs can very easily trade $52.1 million this season, allowing them to possibly add a big-name star like Giannis Antetokounmpo or LeBron James.
As far-fetched as that sounds, San Antonio could pair Waters III, Olynyk, Harrison Barnes, and Keldon Johnson in a deal, matching nearly any salary in the league.
With the exception of Johnson, all of those players are on expiring deals, offering unparalleled financial flexibility for whoever they make a deal with. On top of that, they can add draft picks to sweeten the pot without giving up any of their young talent that they plan on building around.
In theory, the Spurs could enter the second half of the season with Victor Wembanyama, De’Aaron Fox, Devin Vassell, Stephon Castle, Jeremy Sochan, Julian Champagnie, Carter Bryant, Dylan Harper, and “insert superstar here.” That’s not a bad core by any means
While the Spurs are expected to make no changes between now and the start of the season, they are loaded up to be major players at the deadline. Don’t count them out!
