Here's who's teeing off in the Bloomington City Golf Qualifying Tournament

The heat is on as the Bloomington City Golf Qualifying Tournament takes place this weekend at toasty, maybe rainy, Cascades.

Both rounds will tee off at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, June 28-29 and the early weather report is a mix of heat (upper 80s) and storms. Only once in the 36-hole tourney’s history has it been limited to as few as 18 holes.

The defending champs are Jason Bannister (Men’s), Tim Gillespie (Seniors) and Dan Neubecker (Super Seniors). All three have tee times but are not required to play as they have already earned the No. 1 seed for match play.

Men’s groups will tee off from 7:30-8:50 a.m., with Super Seniors from 9:10-9:50 and Seniors from 10:10-10:50. Groups will be re-paired and given new tee times for the second round based on first-round scores.

There are 32 in the Men’s, 20 in the Super Seniors and 20 Seniors.

The top 15 finishers in each division will make the Championship flights for match play. A 139 has won the men’s tourney the past three years in a row while Ike Martin’s record 131 from 1993 still stands. Last year’s top qualifiers were Chris Williams (Men’s), Gillespie (Seniors) and Neubecker (Super Seniors).

Several former champs are in the field, including Brian Muehlhaus, Ike Martin, Gary EuDaly, Rory Brown, Dick Meacham, Steve Hinds, Matt Till, Troy Gillespie and Jim Alexander and a few more who won titles as juniors: Mike Vernon, Sam Wise, Simon Deliyannis and Ryan Decker. Notable recent contenders/past champs in the men’s field missing this year are Williams, Mitch Oard and Jace Day.

The Men’s division is also getting a spike in younger golfers with Edgewood’s Zayne Dwigans, Calvin McDonald and Hank Ripley coming off their high school seasons and 2024 Mustang grad Carter Chaney in the field along with Decker, an incoming North freshman. North coach Harrison Carmichael and Edgewood coach Garry Lee are also competing as is South girls coach Jim Southern.

There’s still time to join in

Men’s regular flights, women and junior qualifying rounds must be played before June 30, and the entry fee is $15 with juniors free. The match play tourney will run July 6-7 and 13-14.
