Jul. 10—Greely girls soccer: For almost a decade, Class B South had been dominated by two programs, Yarmouth and Cape Elizabeth, who combined for seven straight state titles. The Rangers broke through that ceiling last fall with an undefeated season to win their first state title since 2015. Greely beat both Yarmouth and Cape in the regional tournament.
Penobscot Valley girls basketball: The Howlers stormed to their first state title, finishing 22-0 with an average margin of victory of 44.7 points. Despite being a Class C team, Penobscot Valley finished No. 7 in the final Varsity Maine poll, ahead of a pair of teams with nearly six times its enrollment in Biddeford and Gorham.
South Portland girls basketball: The Red Riots ended a 39-year state championship drought, and they toppled defending regional champ Gorham and state champion Cheverus to do it. The Riots went 19-3 and improved under first-year coach Brianne Maloney as the season progressed, and showed their balance in the Class AA final victory over Cheverus with double-digit scoring efforts from Emma Travis, Destiny Peter and Annie Whitmore.
Winthrop/Maranacook field hockey: The Ramblers faced the pressure of being three-time Class C champions, and while every player returned, most were underclassmen. No problem. They went undefeated and ended the season in familiar fashion: winning a fourth consecutive state title thanks to a game-winning goal by Madeline Wagner for the third straight year.
