Jul. 10—Morse swimming: The undefeated Shipbuilders claimed their fourth straight KVAC title and then the Class B title, the program’s first state championship since 2006. They were the only team to set a state record this season — in fact, they set four (three relays, one individual), including the 400 freestyle relay record that stood for 26 years before Morse broke it twice in 11 days.
Old Orchard Beach football: A year removed from a stinging upset championship loss, the Seagulls dominated, averaging 62 points per game in an 11-0 season. OOB emphatically showcased the big-play ability of quarterback Brady Plante and receiver Riley Provencher in trouncing Stearns, 60-14, in the eight-man Small School championship.
Orono tennis: The Red Riots went 16-0 and won the first state championship in program history. That included defeating Waynflete in the Class C state final, snapping the Flyers’ streak of 16 consecutive state championships — the longest such streak in any Maine high school sport.
St. Dom’s baseball: The pressure on the young Saints to win a fourth straight state title without most of the players who won the first three was amplified when it was announced that the school was closing. But after a slow start, they won their final 12 games and sent the school out on top with a fourth Class D title in a row.
