Golden State Valkyries make history on way to clinching playoff berth in first season

In their first official season in the WNBA, the Golden State Valkyries have made history.

With a win over the Dallas Wings on Thursday, the Valkyries clinched a playoff berth for the first time in franchise history. The Valkyries became the first-ever WNBA expansion team to clinch a trip to the playoffs in their inaugural season.

Prior to locking up a spot in the WNBA playof dance, the Valkyrie had a tough battle with 2025 No. 1 overall pick Paige Bueckers and the Dallas Wings.

In a close game that went down the stretch, Veronica Burton tallied seven points in the final 22 seconds, including a tough and-one bucket past Bueckers to help seal an 84-80 win at Chase Center on Thursday.

Janelle Salaun led the Valkyries with 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field to go along with a trio of made 3-pointers, six rebounds and an assist in 37 minutes.

Burton finished with 15 points and five assists while Carla Leite added 15 points and five assists in 22 minutes off the bench.

Bueckers led the game with 27 points on 11-of-20 shooting from the field to go along with six assists, four rebounds and four steals.

Along with cementing a spot in the playoffs, Golden State’s win on Thursday was its fifth straight, a season-high.

The Valkyries still have three games on the regular season remaining, including two against the first-place 32-9 Minnesota Linx.

While they currently sit at the sixth seed, it’s still a mystery on who the Valkyries will play in the opening round of the postseason. The playoffs will begin September 14.
