Former Wisconsin football standout, Eagles star earns major recognition

Former Wisconsin and current Philadelphia Eagles star linebacker Zack Baun was named a team captain for the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday.

The Super Bowl 59 champion was one of eight Eagles to earn the nod ahead of the 2025 slate, accompanying running back Saquon Barkley, quarterback Jalen Hurts, wide receiver A.J. Brown, safety Reed Blankenship, kicker Jake Elliot and offensive linemen Lane Johnson and Jordan Mailata.

The honor marks Baun’s latest achievement in a string of accomplishments dating back to the conclusion of the 2024 slate, his first with the Eagles. After registering 88 total tackles across four seasons with the New Orleans Saints, Baun burst onto the scene with 151 tackles, 11 for loss, five quarterback hits, 3 1/2 sacks, four pass deflections, five forced fumbles and an interception in 16 starts during the regular season.

The performance elevated him into Defensive Player of the Year contention, where he finished as a finalist along with T.J. Watt, Myles Garrett, Trey Hendrickson and Patrick Surtain II (winner). Baun was also named a first-team All-Pro and a Pro Bowler at the conclusion of Philadelphia’s regular season run.

Afterwards, Baun served as the Eagles’ No. 1 option at linebacker during the franchise’s historic run in the postseason. In wins over the Green Bay Packers, Los Angeles Rams, Washington Commanders and Kansas City Chiefs, he logged 33 total tackles (20 solo), two tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries, two interceptions and one forced fumble.

In Super Bowl 59, he notched a team-high seven tackles (three solo) and a crucial interception against three-time Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes. His play was a major factor in the Eagles’ 40-22 triumph. Roughly one month later, he signed a three-year, $51 million deal to remain with the organization.

Baun will now look to put together his second straight Pro Bowl-caliber season. The Eagles begin their season with a bout against the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday, Sept. 4.
