Hyderabad: Acting on a specific intelligence regarding transportation of smuggled foreign origin gold from Chennai by car, the officers of Hyderabad Zonal Unit of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) intercepted three persons at Panthangi Toll Plaza in Choutuppal while travelling in a car from Chennai to Bidar in Karnataka on Wednesday.
Upon thorough questioning, they revealed that they were carrying foreign origin smuggled gold by concealing it in a specially made cavity below the handbrake. Then one of them opened the secret cavity by pulling a latch beside the clutch and three packets wrapped in brown tape containing 24Kt gold bars and cut pieces of 99.5 per cent purity, weighing 3577.00 grams.
The gold valued at Rs.2.51 crore was recovered from the car. The recovered gold along with the vehicle were seized and the three persons were arrested under the provisions of the Customs Act-1962 and remanded to judicial custody.
