Spoilers for the season 2 finale of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place.
You know what they say: when God closes a door, he opens a portal to a shadow realm. Season 2 of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place saw Selena Gomez return in a move TV Tropes classifies as “Back for the Dead,” ie: when a beloved character returns to a franchise, only to be offed almost immediately. It happened to Cordelia on Angel, it happened to Laurie Strode in Halloween: Resurrection, and it seemingly happened to Alex Russo. After it was revealed that Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown) was Alex’s long-lost daughter, Alex sacrificed herself by sealing herself in a parallel universe of dark magic. An evil wizard opened a portal to a hell dimension, and it could only be closed from the hell dimension side. Bummer.
But! All is not lost. Being trapped in another dimension is easy work in speculative fiction. To again put it in Buffy universe terms, Alex Russo got the “Angel in season 2 of BtVS” treatment and not the “killing Cordy off to allegedly punish Charisma Carpenter for getting pregnant.” At the end of the two-part finale, Billie and Alex’s brother Justin (David Henrie) vow to get SelGo back one day. Maybe after her honeymoon with Benny Blanco?
