Dancing With the Stars blessed us with Flavor Flav as a guest judge for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame night on November 4. Yes, the same Flavor Flav who’s unapologetically a hype man for Taylor Swift, the U.S. Olympic women’s rugby team, and anything else he’s hyperfixated on. Throughout the evening, Flav praised the couples for their unity and connection, and when it came time to vote, he eagerly handed out 9s and 10s to nearly every pairing, with an enthusiastic “Yeah boy!” Even Andy Richter, who seemed stuck receiving 6s and 7s from the judges, earned his first 9 from Flav. Just moments before, Flav gave Alix Earle, consistently one of the top-scoring stars, an identical score. Flav’s voting style mirrors how the new DWTS fans are feeling about the stars left on the show. Everyone loves Richter, so he deserves a 9 just for being endearing.
While past guest judges like former pros Cheryl Burke and Kym Johnson gave the dancers great advice and techniques in their critiques, that kind of specific feedback should be given by the judges every week, not just when a former pro returns. Instead, the guest judge should reflect how the audience is feeling about the competition and give flowers to dancers who might not otherwise see a paddle show off a perfect 10. It’s about dancing after all, can’t we all just have a little fun?
