Cunha holds ‘very positive’ talks over Man United transfer

Matheus Cunha’s representatives have held ‘very positive’ talks with Manchester United over a summer transfer to Old Trafford.

Cunha is expected to leave Wolves in the summer and has a £62.5m release clause in his contract at Molineux. The Brazil international has been an integral part of Wolves’ successful survival battle this season, scoring 14 league goals and adding four assists.

Matheus Cunha has scored more non-penalty league goals p90 this season (0.56) than Mohamed Salah, Vinicius Júnior & Raphinha.

Manchester United have made the 25-year-old a priority signing and the Red Devils are confident the club are leading the race. Fabrizio Romano has revealed that ‘very positive’ talks have taken place between the two parties, with the United project under Ruben Amorim and personal terms discussed.

Amorim is determined to improve the goal threat of his side and views Cunha as an ideal fit. The attacking midfielder has impressed in a similar 3-4-2-1 system at Wolves and ranks among the Premier League’s top players for shots on target per 90 (2nd), fouls drawn (2nd), successful take-ons (7th) and non-penalty goals (6th).

Cunha turned down interest from Premier League rivals in January to sign a new contract at Wolves – with the condition of a release clause.

“I had a lot of offers but I wouldn’t feel well if I had done it (left Wolves),” Cunha said to The Guardian last month.

“Some things you can’t control but I couldn’t leave the club in the middle of the season, in a difficult situation, in the relegation zone.

“Now, we’re close to achieving our goal [of staying up]. But I’ve made it clear that I need to take the next step. I want to fight for titles, for big things. I have potential.”
