Crazy stat proves why the Steelers didn't try to re-sign QB Justin Fields

Last season, the Pittsburgh Steelers doubled down on veteran quarterbacks. The team brought in Justin Fields and Russell Wilson with what we assumed was a plan to play both and re-sign one of them. Half of that plan worked as Fields and Wilson both got at least six starts but in the end, Wilson went to the New York Giants and Fields signed a huge contract with the New York Jets.

When it comes to Fields, we really thought he would be the quarterback the Steelers try to keep but a stat shared by NFL analyst Warren Sharp might have told us why the Steelers chose to go in another direction.

Sharp pointed out that Fields is 0-22 as a starter when opponents score 21 points or more. Going back over the last four years, Fields is the only quarterback in the NFL who is winless in this scenario over the past four seasons.

Justin Fields has led his teams to an 0-22 record when opponents score at least 21 points

NFL teams score 22.4 points/game the last 4 years

Fields is the only QB winless the last 4 years with at least 10 starts made

After Fields and Wilson left, Pittsburgh brought in veteran and future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers to be the starter in 2025. The Steelers will take on Fields and the Jets in Week One of the regular season.
