Dallas Cowboys defensive back Israel Mukuamu has shined throughout training camp and recently had a standout performance in the team’s first preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday.

Mukuamu snagged a highlight reel worthy interception as he was tied to the hip of the receiver on a go ball from quarterback Stetson Bennett.

“It says a lot [about the work I’m putting in],” said Mukuamu after the game. “I went out there and made a play, but there are still plays out there to be made. I’m just ready to go out there and just keep proving myself.”

The South Carolina product and former sixth-round pick (2021) has professional experience playing multiple positions in the secondary and has the potential to be a valuable asset for a Cowboys team that needs all the help they can get at a position of concern.

Mukuamu started his career in Dallas playing safety but can hold his own against bigger wide receivers on the boundary with his 6-4, 205-pound frame, while also having the ability to be an impactful slot corner against tight ends.

Defensive coordinator Matt Eberflhas has taken notice of Mukuamu’s versatile skillset—tabbing him as their Swiss Army Knife.

“That was a great play he made,” said Eberflus. “The interception was awesome, and the ability to cover tight ends, cover corners and cover in the slot — that’s a unique skillset. And also being able to play the run, too. He’s been doing good and he’s our Swiss Army Knife.

“We’ve moved him all around, looking to find a place for him as far as what fits best and what his skillset works at, for him and for us. I’m excited about him.”

If Mukuamu continues on this trajectory, he could become a key contributor in a Cowboys secondary looking to make a serious impact this season.
