Courtland Sutton took less so teammates could get paid (and another deal might be close)

With several teammates lined up waiting for extensions, Denver Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton may have taken somewhat of a hometown discount to get his deal done.

During an interview with Colleen Wolfe and Ian Rapoport of NFL Network on Wednesday, Sutton hinted that he took less so the team would have enough salary cap space to also give extensions to other players.

“They knew that I was very realistic in understanding that, yes I would like to be taken care of, however, there’s a lot of guys in that locker room that are due,” Sutton told NFL Network. “[There are] a lot of guys that have performed very, very well that are chasing a second contract, and I want those guys to get taken care of. And to be able to get mine taken care of and get that out of the way gives us that flexibility and that room to get the rest of those guys taken care of. … My biggest thing was us being able to keep this team together as long as we possibly can so that we can continue to chase this ultimate goal of being a championship team.”

One of the other Denver players in line for an extension is defensive lineman Zach Allen, and if @RickeyScoops is to be believed, that deal might be getting close.

(Believe it or not, that page has accurately broken NFL news in the past.)

Allen and pass rusher Nik Bonitto are likely the next two candidates to get extensions. Meanwhile, defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers does not expect a deal before the season begins as the team hasn’t started negotiations with him. We’ll see if “Rickey” is correct about a potential Allen extension happening soon.
