Commanders place rookie lineman on the non-injury football list

The Commanders have placed offensive lineman Timothy McKay on the non-injury football list.

McKay was an undrafted free agent whom the Commanders signed following the 2025 NFL draft. He started his last three years for the N.C. State Wolfpack at both guard and tackle. He is listed at 6-foot-3, weighing 311 pounds. He was selected to take part in the East-West Shrine game following the 2024 season. However, during a Pro Day, McKay suffered a torn pectoral muscle. He subsequently was not drafted by any team.

What does this mean exactly for McKay and the Commanders? Well, the Commanders have not released McKay. Therefore, he will still be in training camp next week. Secondly, he still counts against the 90-man roster for now. He will not be participating in the main on-field work for now, which involves contact and contested competition between offense and defense, etc. What it means is that McKay will be one of the players working on the side fields until they feel he is ready to work out in more competitive situations.

Coming out of N.C. State, many believed McKay was valued as a lineman who would not be drafted in the first round (Thursday) but would be drafted on one of the final two days. However, a torn pectoral injury for a lineman, if requiring surgery, can be an injury that necessitates a significant amount of rehabilitation time. Thus, McKay was not drafted.

It has been reported by various sources that the Commanders signed McKay following the draft to a guaranteed $275 000 undrafted contract. It’s no secret that Commanders GM Adam Peters worked hard in the offseason to rebuild the Washington offensive line. Pro Football Focus, back in the spring, had a mock draft in which they projected McKay being selected in the sixth round. Consequently, Peters had his eye on McKay and thus moved quickly following the draft to sign him, hoping McKay might become a player who could initially add roster depth.
