The Round of 16 is here at the Club World Cup. After 48 matches in the group stage, the tournament is down to its final 16 teams and begin the knockout stage with two matchups on Saturday.
The first matchup of the day takes place between two Brazilian sides. Palmeiras and Botafogo FC face off after Palmeiras finish first in Group A and Botafogo finish second in Group B. Both teams have a rich history in the Brazilian domestic league and they hope to showcase their talents at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
The two sides have faced each other numerous times over the years with Botafogo having the advantage over Palmeiras in the last five meetings (three wins, two draws). Their last game saw a 0-0 draw between the two but a winner must prevail today. The game will take place at 12 p.m.
In the second matchup of the day, Benfica take on Chelsea. The Portuguese team topped their group after defeating Bayern Munich, 1-0 on June 24. A statement win that could give confidence to the team moving forward. The win put them in position to face the eventual winners of the Chelsea and Espérance matchup.
Chelsea joined the Club World Cup with marque signings such as Liam Delap and Dario Essugo. With a strong team from top to bottom, the English side were a favorite to top their group and make a strong push in the tournament. The loss to Flamengo halted their momentum but a win versus Benfica could set them up nicely for the remainder of the CWC.
The Blues have a good history versus Benfica as they have three wins out of three matches. This duel hasn’t happened since 2013 but both teams will arrive at Bank of America in Charlotte, North Carolina, with a fire in their eye.
