Behind-the-scenes: Explore the backside at Churchill Downs ahead of Kentucky Derby 2025

The backside at Churchill Downs is one of the most unique spaces in all of sports.

Denoted by its signature green roof barns, the backside is home to nearly 1,400 horses during the racing and training season, according to the Kentucky Derby Museum. It’s the space where the horses are stabled and where hundreds of people care for the thoroughbreds who will compete during the Spring Meet at Churchill Downs, of which the Kentucky Derby is part.
