Plenty of excitement has surrounded the Chicago Bears with the arrival of first-year head coach Ben Johnson and the high-powered offense he could bring to the team, but he’s not the only one creating attention.
In an effort to build the strongest staff he could in his first run as a head coach in the NFL, Johnson hired veteran head coach and defensive coordinator Dennis Allen to lead the defense, and the two have made their impact felt right out of the gate.
With training camp underway, Johnson’s offense is going up against Allen’s defense as both coaches work with their units to get their systems in place, and tight end Cole Kmet is taking notice of the defense. Last week, Kmet spoke on Allen’s defense and what challenges he’s seen as he’s gone up against them.
“He brings a lot of stuff, especially on the first plays of camp and minicamp,” Kmet said. “He definitely brings a lot of various pressures and different looks and coverages rotating here and there. But those guys, they definitely harp on playing hard man coverage and being physical with guys in the routes and I think that’s all really good to see and I’m excited to see those guys on defense thrive this year in that type of scheme.”
Although there is plenty of excitement around what Johnson can do for quarterback Caleb Williams and the offense, Allen’s work this training camp could also come with double praise. Whether it’s taking the defensive unit to another level or making life difficult for Williams during camp so he’s ready for the regular season, Allen’s impact will be felt.
