Baldur’s Gate 3 was one of the biggest games of 2023, and naturally, Wizards of the Coast wants to follow it up with a sequel. We already know that the developer behind Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian Studios, is moving on to a new, unrelated project, and Wizards of the Coast has confirmed that the new studio being led by former Respawn Entertainment game director Stig Asmussen–Giant Skull–won’t be working on it either. Instead, players can expect something more action-packed from the newly established studio.
“Baldur’s Gate is an incredible game,” Wizards of the Coast president John Hight said to The Game Business. “And of course, we’re going to do a successor. This is not the successor to that game. We go to Stig and his team to tell an incredible story and bring Dungeons & Dragons to a very broad audience. Ideally, the game will appeal to Dungeons & Dragons players because it will help them realize their imagination. But it’s also going to hopefully appeal to people that love playing action games, that love the Jedi games, that love God of War games.”
Wizards of the Coast isn’t in a big rush to get Baldur’s Gate 4 out– its parent company Hasbro is planning a number of other Dungeons & Dragons games set to launch over the next five years–and several potential partners are being courted for the unenviable task of following in Larian’s footsteps. “We’re going to take our time and find the right partner, the right approach, and the right product that could represent the future of Baldur’s Gate,” Hasbro’s Eugene Evans said last year.
