In case you haven’t heard, Keenan Allen is a Charger once again. The reunion comes over a year after the team traded him away to the Bears to shore up some cap space.
On Tuesday, he signed a one-year, $8.5 million deal to return to his old team. Now, it’s time to project his role on this year’s team, which includes a prediction of what his 2025 stats may look like.
77 catches, 744 yards, 6 touchdowns
It’s unclear what kind of role Allen will have in this year’s offense. Remember, he is still just two years removed from his sixth career Pro Bowl appearance, in which he racked up 1,243 receiving yards and seven touchdowns.
While he wasn’t the same player in 2024, Allen still hauled in 70 catches for 744 yards and seven touchdowns in his lone season with the Bears. Now, he gets to return to familiar ground where he already has a rapport with quarterback Justin Herbert.
A veteran wideout was a necessity for the Chargers after the sudden retirement of Allen’s former running mate, Mike Williams. In addition to his on-field presence, Allen will bring a leadership aspect to this wide receiver room.
That will only help the likes of rookies Tre Harris and KeAndre Lambert-Smith, and will only allow them to develop in 2025. Suddenly, this wide receiver room becomes quite deep.
Ladd McConkey remains the clear go-to option, while Allen, Harris, and Quentin Johnston will all fight for targets beyond him. Regardless, Tuesday’s signing of Allen was big, only elevating the ceiling of the Chargers this upcoming season.
