Yes, it’s an extremely small sample size, but the Kansas City Chiefs are not on track for a 10th-straight AFC West title after they lost their season opener to a division rival in Week 1.
The Chiefs fell to the Los Angeles Chargers last week while the Denver Broncos and Las Vegas Raiders both won their respective matchups. That puts Kansas City at the bottom of the AFC going into Week 2 (yes, yes, small sample size).
L.A. is now ranked first thanks to its division win, followed by the Broncos with a conference win and the Raiders, who also secured a conference win in Week 1. Here’s a look at the full standings after one week of action.
AFC West standings
- Los Angeles Chargers: 1-0 (1-0 in division, conference)
- Denver Broncos: 1-0 (1-0 in conference)
- Las Vegas Raiders: 1-0 (1-0 in conference)
- Kansas City Chiefs: 0-1 (0-1 in division, conference)
If the season ended today, the Chargers would be division champions, but Denver would still be in playoff position as a Wild Card seed. There’s a lot of football left to be played as the Broncos have 16 games remaining on their schedule, but the team’s off to a good start in the hunt for a postseason berth.
