A Lot of People Missed Lindsay Lohan on the Big Screen

Firstly, thank you, Freakier Friday, for bringing Lindsay Lohan back to the big screen. We really needed this, and it seems like moviegoers agree, especially when Disney also brought back Chad Michael Murray on a motorcycle. It’s a recipe for 2000s nostalgia success. Deadline reports that Freakier Friday’s opening weekend box office is estimated to earn around $30 million, coming in second to Weapons but still beating out the original movie, which came in at $20 million back in 2003. Which is pretty good compared to other comedies this summer: The Naked Gun scored $16 million in its opening weekend, and Materialists, a rom-com, earned $11 million. Freakier Friday, thematically, is somewhere in between: the physical comedy of two teenagers being body swapped by the family martiarchs and the romance of anyone who comes in contact with Murray. So it makes sense it’s doing better, especially when it has the boost of being a legacy sequel and silly press schenanigans.
